My baby has sore skin

by Dr Howard Lee

question
My baby has red sore skin around her neck and in her armpits - how do I get rid of it? My doctor thinks it could be impetigo, but I think it's just a sweat rash. Is Sudocrem a good way of treating it, plus keeping the areas clean and dry?

answer
Soreness, especially in the creases of the skin, is common in babies. Impetigo - which just means a superficial bacterial infection of the skin - is also very common. When skin becomes sore and damaged, bacteria, which live normally on the skin surface, are able to travel deeper and cause an infection. The ability to fight even simple infections is not all that well developed in babies, and even small amounts of damage can allow infection to develop - until the immune system has had a chance to build up its defence mechanisms. It is important to keep the areas clean and dry - bacteria of all types thrive in moist areas. Sudocrem, which has some antiseptic effect, and is used for 'sores, nappy rash, simple burns, etc' is worth trying in the early stages - if the rash gets worse, the doctor will prescribe an antibiotic cream.
