Is my baby too big for my dates?
Hello, Can you help with an enquiry please? I went for a scan yesterday (at 27 weeks pregnant) and was told my baby weighed 3lb 8 oz. Isn't this quite big for my dates? It's my seventh baby but I also have glucose in urine now and again - could this be why? Or am I worring over nothing... Thank you
I don?t think you should worry about your baby?s size at the moment. Scans are not a very accurate way of assessing a baby?s weight, and they can be
anything up to a pound out. But even if the scan is correct, and your baby goes to term, it means he may be around 9 1/2 pounds. I don?t know what the birthweight of your other babies were, so although this is not exactly small, it?s not necessarily disastrously big either.
But as you say, glucose in your urine may indicate that you have pregnancy diabetes, which in turn could be the reason your baby is become big. Although it is not uncommon to find a small amount of sugar in the urine at the end of pregnancy, and does not mean that you definitely have diabetes, the hospital staff may suggest you have a Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT) which
will be able to tell for definite. It might be a good idea for you to discuss this with your midwife.
I do hope all goes well for you.
Christine Hill.
