Worried about poor weight gain

by Christine Hill

question

Hi Christine, I am 29 weeks pregnant and weigh 77kg. When I started my pregnancy I was 74kg. I am worried that I haven't put on enough weight! Is this quite normal or should I have started putting on more by now? Haven't been putting on a pound a week!

answer

Weight gain varies enormously during pregnancy - some women gain as little as 17 lbs (8 kilograms) or as much as 35 lbs (15 kilograms). As you say, most of the weight gain during pregnancy takes place during the latter 20 weeks, and between weeks 20 and 30 it is usual for women to put on about 1 lb (450 grams) a week. However, you haven?t said how tall you are, and if there is a possibility that you were overweight before you became pregnant. Assuming that you are not exercising or dieting, maternal weight gain has little significance in isolation. Your midwife will be able to assess whether your baby is growing, which is what is important. If she is concerned, I?m sure she will arrange for you to have a scan, which is a very accurate way to show if your baby is OK.Meanwhile, it might be a good idea to see if you can get a rest during the day. This will be of benefit to both you and your baby. Christine Hill.
