Early arrival?

by Christine Hill

question

I am 32 weeks pregnant and have been having Braxton Hicks contractions since week 20. When I went to see my midwife recently she said that the baby was 3/5 already and seemed surprised. I am slightly concerned that everything seems to be occuring significantly earlier than is normal. Am I likely to have a premature birth and if so what precautions should I take (other than having my bags packed!)?

answer
Braxton Hicks contractions occur very early on in pregnancy. Although most women notice them when they are around 28 to 30 weeks pregnant, the fact that you were aware of these when you were 20 weeks pregnant doesn?t necessarily indicate an early labour.Around 50% of first time mothers engage at 38 weeks ? this means that the midwife can palpate 2/5s or less of the baby?s head above the pubic bone. 3/5s at 32 weeks pregnant means that you are not yet engaged ? thank goodness! It is almost impossible to say if your baby will be born early, although it might be worth asking your mother if her babies were born early ? a short gestation can sometimes be inherited. The best precaution you can take is to make sure you get a rest during the day ? this is important for both you and your baby, I do hope all goes well for you. Christine Hill.
