antibiotic worries

by Christine Hill

question
I was prescribed cefaclor to treat an ear infection when I was unknowingly two and a half weeks pregnant. Within 2 days, I developed an allergic reaction to the drug: my face became all swollen and I developed rashes on the face and forearms. I stopped right away and within a day I was back to normal. I am now 9 weeks pregnant and I am very worried that this event might have hurt the development of the baby. My GP says not to worry but I don't trust her. My booking in appointment with the midwife is only on my 13th week. What are your thoughts on this? Are there any tests I should request that might alleviate my concerns? Many thanks for your help.

answer
I think you should try very hard to stop worrying. As you say, you developed a local allergic reaction, which subsided as soon as you stopped the antibiotic. I agree with your GP that this reaction wouldn?t have had any effect on your baby. The trouble with being pregnant, is that there is always something to worry about. I hope all goes well for you.
