Conception and exercise

by Dr Howard Lee

question
I have just started trying for a baby but I need to lose a lot of weight. Once I've conceived, if I start doing sit-ups is it likely to cause a miscarriage?

answer
It's always a good idea to lose as much of your excess weight as you can - sensibly, of course - as it will improve your chances of conceiving and certainly help your general health both during and after the pregnancy. At the moment, there's no harm in any of the exercises that you choose to perform. (Remember, unless you are an absolute gym 'freak' you will not lose lots of weight by exercise alone; it will help, but diet is still the main course of action.) If you should conceive, not know it, and continue exercising, no harm should come to your baby if the exercises are 'standard'. However, don't do anything that involves excessive jolting, jumping and jogging if you have a positive test.
