When does fertility return after stopping the pill?

by Peg Plumbo

question
I'm 29 and I've stopped taking birth control pills after using them on and off for ten years. We've been using a diaphragm for about a month, and I'm concerned about miscalculating the time and removing it earlier than recommended. When does fertility return after stopping the pill?

answer
Your fertility should return very soon because the low-dose pills that we use today have very little effect on most women’s fertility. Occasionally, it does take up to six months to re-establish periods, but this is unusual.

Your risks with premature removal of the diaphragm are very slight. Most of the sperm are killed immediately upon contact with the gel used in conjunction with the diaphragm.
