Does scoliosis affect my ability to conceive?

by Peg Plumbo

question
My recently diagnosed scoliosis sometimes prevents me from doing anything for the day or I have to visit my chiropractor. Can a scoliosis patient have a successful pregnancy with little or no bed rest?

answer
Yes, I have cared for many women with scoliosis, and the degree of difficulty I have found is related to the severity of the condition. If you have a severe curvature of the spine, which involves your hip or shoulders, configuration of the thoracic area or the pelvis, this may cause more severe discomfort or even breathing problems or weight bearing difficulties during later pregnancy.

Ask to be referred to a physiotherapist for help and advice. They can supply a wealth of information on this condition and how it may affect a pregnancy and what activities and exercises should be encouraged or limited.
