Not ovulating after coming off the pill

by Peg Plumbo

question
I'm 27 and took the combined pill for eight years. I'm trying for a baby, but my ovulation-predictor test kit says I’m not ovulating – even though I bleed regularly every month. Does it usually take long for ovulation to resume?

answer
Ovulation is often delayed when you come off the pill, though it’s not as common as it once was with high-dose pills. However, the pill doesn’t cause infertility, nor does it improve fertility. If you were irregular or sub-fertile before starting the pill, you’re likely to return to that condition.

Give your body six months to revert to a spontaneous cycle. If you're having regular periods of normal (four to six days) length with the normal types of premenstrual symptoms, you are probably ovulating.

Start taking your basal body temperature and look out for cervical mucus changes. If you buy a basal body temperature thermometer, the instructions for interpreting the temperatures are included.

If things don't return to normal, ask your GP to refer you to a gynaecologist/obstetrician with experience in endocrinology.

I wish you well and best of luck.
