What is a ‘normal’ cycle?

by Toni Weschler

question
I was surprised to find out that many of my friends have irregular cycles or none at all. One friend ran in a marathon last year, but the others just do an average amount of exercise. Is this common? Am I ‘more fertile’ because I have a regular 30-day cycle?

answer
Actually, completely regular, predictable cycles are more unusual than ones that vary. Common expectation is that all women should have 28-day cycles and ovulate on Day 14. Not only can a woman have cycles that vary, but a woman's cycles may differ depending on whether she is an adolescent, just coming off the pill, breastfeeding, or approaching the menopause. Her cycles may vary depending on other temporary factors such as illness, travel, stress, or exercise.

Of course, running in a marathon is enough to make any woman not ovulate. In order to release an egg, women need to have enough body fat to allow the complex hormonal feedback system that leads to ovulation. In some ways, you could say that you may be more fertile, because the fact that you have such regular cycles means that you are probably ovulating every single cycle, which you cannot necessarily say of women with irregular cycles.

If your friends were taught how to chart their cycles through observing their three main fertility signs (waking temperature, cervical fluid and cervical position) they would be able to ultimately know if and when they were fertile in any given cycle, or certainly determine if there may be a problem conceiving, which they can resolve.
