Conceiving difficult after the pill
I came off the pill about seven months ago and have had regular unprotected sex since, but I haven't conceived yet. My period is overdue and I feel that I'm pregnant but my test shows negative. Why? Please explain what might be happening.

Dear Sue
You're obviously going through quite an anxious time but I should tell you that it does take the average couple about nine to 10 months to conceive; 50% manage in two to three months, but 10% take a year or more. About 15% of couples do have fertility problems. The fact that your period is overdue may just mean you're not producing eggs regularly. This does make 'getting pregnant' a little more difficult but you can get a good idea of your 'fertile time' each month by recording your basal body temperature and watching for other signs and symptoms.
