Conceiving difficult after the pill

by Dr Howard Lee

question
I came off the pill about seven months ago and have had regular unprotected sex since, but I haven't conceived yet. My period is overdue and I feel that I'm pregnant but my test shows negative. Why? Please explain what might be happening.
Sue

answer
Dear Sue
You're obviously going through quite an anxious time but I should tell you that it does take the average couple about nine to 10 months to conceive; 50% manage in two to three months, but 10% take a year or more. About 15% of couples do have fertility problems. The fact that your period is overdue may just mean you're not producing eggs regularly. This does make 'getting pregnant' a little more difficult but you can get a good idea of your 'fertile time' each month by recording your basal body temperature and watching for other signs and symptoms. Look at our articles on getting pregnant and natural family planning.
