Ecstasy and the Pill

by Dr Howard Lee

question
I’ve been experiencing period pain and mood swings, both of which are unusual for me. I have also felt a fluttering feeling on the lower left hand side of my abdomen. I am worried I may be pregnant even though I am on a contraceptive pill.

I know that I have taken my pill correctly, but a while back I took
two ecstasy pills and was sick several times. Does this drug interfere with contraceptive pills? Is this how I may have conceived? I’m taking a urine sample to the doctors to check.

I have not taken any ecstasy since that time but please tell me, is it really as dangerous as it’s portrayed to be? So many doctors and professional people have tried the drug and a lot of my friends take it at weekends.

answer

I think you are wise to have a pregnancy test – especially after vomiting which can lower the effectiveness of the Pill.

The 'E' question worries me greatly. Taking just one 'E' as an experiment
has caused real misery for several of my patients. They suffered disturbing flashbacks for months, even years afterwards. Knowing people who have taken several pills without ill effect does not lessen the potential danger. It’s like playing Russian roulette – will it be the next one that causes the problem?

I can only encourage you to stop
taking it.
