Fertilised egg and how it implants

by Dr Howard Lee

question
What would cause a fertilised egg not to implant? I have had three months, where I am sure I conceived, but had a negative pregnancy test. I have two children, who were both conceived the first month. Although I was not expecting to be so lucky a third time, I was positive I was pregnant for about five days, only to be disappointed by the negative test. I am a heavy smoker and wonder if this may be a factor?

answer
A fertilised ovum sometimes doesn’t implant itself into the prepared lining of the womb when:
  • The womb is not well enough prepared, maybe because one of the pregnancy hormones has not done its job efficiently enough
  • A fertilised ovum is not developing ‘normally’ and so Mother Nature rejects it at this early stage
I do understand that sometimes you can be ‘sure’ that you are pregnant by the feelings you experience – but this may not be, in fact, true. I presume that your other two children were conceived with your current partner? If this is the case, then you’ll be successful eventually, I am sure. Third babies do sometimes take time to get going, and we don’t know why.

It is certainly true, and much research has shown that, smoking can be the cause of failure to conceive. So, the answer may be – but I’m sure you don’t want me to say it – to give up. Good luck – on both counts.
