Contraception pill and time difference when travelling

by Dr Howard Lee

question
I am on the pill (Loestrin 20) and I take it everyday at 6pm. I am going to America next week, where there is a 5 hour time difference. Do I take my pill at the same time as usual or 5 hours earlier?
Thanks Emma

answer
Hello Emma,
Thanks for your email contact.
Try to keep your ‘pill’ on a 24 hour clock. In other words, take your ‘first pill in America/on the plane, exactly 24 hours after your last one in the UK – let’s hope that it isn’t at an inconvenient time. It is important to do this because, with Loestrin, there is a very small dose of Oestrogen (20mg compared with the usual dose of 30mg). Therefore, you want to make sure it works. Keep the pills at 24 hour intervals.
Have a great time!
All the best.
