Can you become pregnant while on Depo Provera?

by Peg Plumbo

question
I am 43 and recently lost my two-month-old baby to SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome). I want another baby as soon as possible, but I recently had a Depo-Provera contraceptive injection. How soon can I safely become pregnant and how can I increase the chances of conception? Will the pills I took to dry up my milk affect my fertility?

answer
I am so very sorry for the loss of your baby and I can understand your desire to become pregnant as soon as possible.

Depo-Provera is a synthetic progesterone that alters cervical mucus and may cause anovulation (when no egg is released). It will ‘wear off’ 82 to 90 days after the injection but some women have reported difficulty in getting pregnant immediately after the three months. Because you have had just one injection, this may not be true for you.

The drug you took to dry up the milk should not affect your fertility. Because of your age, I would consider consulting an infertility specialist who could help with ovulation induction and advise you on the best way forward.

I wish you luck.
