My 10 month old doesn't crawl

by Coram Family

question
My baby is 10 months old and still doesn’t crawl. All the other babies of this age that we know are mobile. How can I motivate him to move?

answer
Yes, babies of your son’s age are usually on the move by now, although not always by crawling. Does he move himself from place to place by any means – perhaps by rolling, caterpillar creeping or bottom shuffling? If not, does he look like he wants to get mobile? Does he spend a lot of time in a baby walker? If so, it could help to get him out of the walker for longer stretches of the day.

In order to crawl, babies need to be on the floor and with space to move about. Put your son on his stomach on a comfortable floor surface, not skiddy, and play with him in that position. Perhaps have a few toys out of reach, but get them to him swiftly when he stretches to grasp. You want your son to be keen to get to interesting toys and parts of the room. So don’t take him everywhere he wants to go, but obviously don’t let him get distressed if he can’t move himself.

Is your son interested in play? Does he grasp and handle objects and enjoy physical play with leg kicking and bouncing on your lap? Is there anything that makes you concerned about his physical development in other ways? If so, then do have a chat with your health visitor, GP or visit the child health clinic. If he is lively and active, perhaps he is just a late mover and plenty of play and putting him on his stomach – an important position ready for crawling – will get him on the move.
