First toys

by Coram Family

question
My baby loves holding rattles and watching mobiles but I want to buy one or two toys that she’ll enjoy and find stimulating in the months ahead. I can’t spend a fortune. Any suggestions?

answer
You don’t say how old your baby is at the moment but she sounds quite young. There’s no need to spend large amounts of money on baby toys, but you could pick one or two that hold her attention as she develops over the months.

Babies like playthings that make sounds as well as being satisfying to hold. You can buy a couple of noisy soft balls or cubes and perhaps just one of the multi-activity consoles. But you can also create homemade sound-making toys. Small see-through plastic bottles can be filled with different substances (rice, glitter, lentils) and the top screwed back on firmly.

She will love books to look at and scrabble at the pictures before she is ready for a ‘proper’ story. Get her some attractive book boards and enjoy them with her. You can make your own books by slipping attractive pictures into a clear plastic wallet.

When she can sit up, your baby will love all types of objects (not so small she can swallow them) and containers to put them in and take them out of. You can buy stacking/nesting containers from a hardware shop. But babies love exploring a range of ordinary objects that you can keep in an open basket or container: a woolly ball, large cotton reels, a smallish wooden spoon, tins with lids. Be with her, show interest and play with her if she offers you items.
