High blood pressure after caesarean due to pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH)

by Peg Plumbo

question
I recently had a caesarean due to pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH). It's been two and a half weeks since the birth and my blood pressure is still a little high. Also, in the last week I have been experiencing mild though constant headaches.

When can I expect my blood pressure to return to normal? Second, should I be concerned about the headaches? They are relieved by painkillers, but only for about four hours, when I need to take more.

answer

Dear Katie,

Pregnancy-induced hypertension can be an indication of blood pressure problems not associated with pregnancy, so I think it would be a good idea to have this checked out. You may need to take some pills to lower your blood pressure. Sometimes the effects of pregnancy linger beyond delivery and, although most of the time the drop in blood pressure is quite dramatic after the baby is born, in some cases it continues.

It would be a good idea to go back to your doctor to have your blood pressure checked and perhaps have your kidneys checked.

I wish you well and I hope this is resolved soon.
Peg
