Pain when passing a motion

by Dr Howard Lee

question
I had my baby on the 4th of December. I had an elective Caesarean section and I’m breastfeeding. When I pass motion it hurts and there is blood in it?

answer
Congratulations on your new arrival – I hope that ALL your family is well. I am sure the problem you mention is not a serious one. Usually, there has been some congestion/enlargement of the veins ‘down below’ (both at the front as well as the back passage) during your antenatal period.

You probably have/had a small tear or ‘pile’ in the back passage. This gets irritated and bleeds, when you have bowel action (often harder than normal at first), and it will usually settle on its own, or with the use of a local cream or ointment. Do ask your doctor. Make sure, too, that you prevent constipation.
