Working part-time
My employers have told me that once I have my baby, I cannot return to work on a part-time basis, even for a temporary period. They say they 'have a problem with continuity in terms of who does what work'.
I have worked for my current employers for over four years and carried out all aspects of the function we provide. I don't consider the reasons they've given to be justified, especially as we are due to take on a new member of staff and workload would be reallocated at that time.
When you ask your employer for part time work, they are legally obliged to give full consideration to your request.
Your argument must be based on the fact that you cannot work full time because of your childcare responsibilities. Your employer must have sound business reasons for stating that your particular post is not one that can be done on either a part-time or more flexible basis.
If they genuinely have problems with continuity and they can show that this would be a problem, then this may be a good business reason. You should ask them to explain this to you further and submit you plans to show how you would cover the job on a part time basis.
