Is breast pain normal during pregnancy?

by Deb Donovan

question
My wife is six months pregnant and is experiencing breast pain. Is this normal during pregnancy?

answer
Many breast changes occur during pregnancy. Early in pregnancy, breasts usually become more tender and begin to fill out. This is due to the development of the milk-producing structures within the breast. Blood flow increases and the veins become more noticeable. The nipples become more sensitive and the areolae darken in colour, becoming a visual cue for the baby when he is put to the breast.

Some women experience discomfort as all these changes take place. Wearing a comfortable, supportive bra should help.

If your wife continues to experience pain, has a high temperature, flu-like symptoms or any reddened areas on her breasts, she should consult her GP or midwife for advice.

My best wishes.
