Cyst on ovary during pregnancy
When I was eight weeks pregnant, an ultrasound scan revealed a cyst on my ovary. My doctor said this is not uncommon in the first trimester and it may disappear by the end of the trimester or by the end of the pregnancy. Is it likely to disappear spontaneously? Are these cysts common, and are there any precautions I should take?
This can be upsetting because we do not consider cysts to be normal. Only since we have been doing early ultrasounds have we really come to understand how common they are.
The ovum ruptures from a mature follicle and leaves a cavity, which seals over and fills with fluid. This causes a corpus luteum cyst. These spontaneously resolve or disappear on their own 99 percent of the time. This type of cyst does not affect the pregnancy. A repeat ultrasound will probably show it is shrinking.
Try not to worry.
