Placenta praevia

by Christine Hill

question
I have just had my 20-week scan. I was told that they would have to keep an eye on my placenta as it was over the birth canal. What does this mean and is it dangerous? I am now worrying myself. They didn't seem worried in the hospital.

answer
It sounds as though you have something called placenta praevia. The placenta is usually sited at the top of the uterus (under your rib cage) and in your case, the placenta is sited at the bottom (the pelvis end). I expect it is near the cervix - the opening of the uterus. If you went into labour, there would be a danger that the baby’s head could dislodge the placenta.

What often happens is that the uterus stretches as your baby grows, and the placenta moves with the growing uterus away from the cervix. If this happens there’s no problem when you go into labour. I expect you’ll have another scan in six to eight weeks to check the situation.

If the placenta stays near the cervix, your baby will be delivered by a Caesarean section, but your doctor is unlikely to make a decision until nearer the time.

There’s absolutely nothing to worry about at the moment, but if you start to lose blood you need to go to hospital as quickly as possible.
