Symphysis pubis dysfunction

by Christine Hill

question
I think I may be pregnant and in my two previous pregnancies I suffered with symphysis pubis dysfunction. Will it get worse with a 3rd third pregnancy?

answer
Dear Jeannie, All pregnant women produce a hormone that loosens the ligaments around the symphysis pubis (the front of the pelvic bone) so it can open slightly during childbirth. Some women produce more of this hormone than is necessary, and this can result in what’s called symphysis pubis dysfunction. For the pregnant woman it’s a real nuisance, because her pelvis can feel very unstable and painful. It can be extremely debilitating and sometimes makes walking difficult. However, once the baby’s born, the ligaments eventually return to normal.

If this is what you had during your last two pregnancies, I’m afraid it’s likely that it will happen again with another pregnancy but not necessarily worse than before. If you’re pregnant and you find it does happen again, you need to ask your GP to refer you to a physiotherapist. There should be one at the hospital where you are going to have your baby. She or he will be able to help by fitting you with a corset support, which should reduce the symptoms. The physiotherapist will also advise you about activities and movements you should and shouldn’t undertake.
