Constipation in pregnancy
I am 18 weeks pregnant, and though I try to keep my fibre intake up, drink lots of fluids, etc, last week I had such a constipated 'poo' that it was almost as bad as having a baby! I just didn't know what to do with myself! It was honestly awful. Just in case I ever get in that situation again, is there anything I can buy - maybe to drink, which could instantly make me 'go'. My motion was almost as big as a baby's head and I'm not exaggerating!
Could I buy some syrup of figs, would that be OK? I know I should avoid such constipation, and I do try, but I am worried, in case it happens again.

Wow! You poor thing! I really do know just what you must have gone through. A catch 22 situation - you can't take anything which 'would instantly make you go', because it would be too irritable for your bowel. You do, however, need to keep things 'on the move'.
Great that you are pushing the fluids, and the roughage (lots of fruit & vegetables). I would suggest that you try the vegetable laxative of Senna (Liquid or tablets of Sennakot), which you take in increasing amounts quite safely, so that you can affect a DAILY bowel action that is soft and 'squashy'...so that you don't have to go through labour every couple of days! Remember, too, that you could ease any hard stool (which can't be made soft by anything you take by the mouth - it's too late) by using Glycerine suppositories - again, quite safe.
Well, keep trying: fluids, roughage, exercise and the rest of the suggestions.
