Moderate lifting

by Peg Plumbo

question
I am currently about 34 weeks pregnant and already have a 15-month-old little boy. Everyone is always telling me ‘don't lift that, don't do that, that is too heavy’. Well, my little boy weighs 26lb and nothing that I pick up weighs more than he does.

Should I be concerned? Could lifting him all day every day become a problem now that I am at the end of my pregnancy?

Please answer so I will have some piece of mind.

Thank you,
Marsha

answer

Dear Marsha,

The body's connective tissue, ligaments and tendons soften a bit during pregnancy under the effect of progesterone and this puts you at greater risk of injury. There really is no problem with lifting during pregnancy as long as you use good body mechanics. Always lift with a neutral spine - that means never with a curved back. If you are at risk of placental separation, placenta previa or premature labour, you should not lift at all. But if all is well and you use common sense, you should be able to lift whatever you feel you can handle. Let your son climb onto your lap rather than picking him up.

The real problem comes from repetitive activity involving lifting. Studies have linked premature labour with very hard physical work during pregnancy.
