Sleeping on stomach

by Peg Plumbo

question
I am 20 weeks pregnant. When I lie on my stomach, the baby's movements become more frequent and vigorous. I know I shouldn't lie on my back, but am I cramping or hurting the baby by lying on my stomach?

Terri

answer

Dear Terri,

The baby is not crowded, as he is swimming in a warm-water bath and is too small to be really cramped. As you sleep on your abdomen, the baby falls forward toward your abdominal wall and stimulates more of your nerves in the front.

You can sleep in any position that is comfortable without fear of harming the baby. Even resting on your back is perfectly OK. It is only in labour, when the uterine blood flow is somewhat compromised by the frequent contractions, that lying on one's back is not recommended.

You may be able to sleep more comfortably during the last part of the pregnancy with a pillow between your legs, inclining towards your abdomen. That is a good compromise. Try not to worry. Your baby is fine in whatever position you choose.
