Parentage concerns

by Christine Hill

question
I have a concern over who is the father of my child. I had a one-night stand with a very old friend. My husband knows about this, but now both parties are concerned about parentage. Can you tell me if there are any non-invasive tests I can have to determine who the father of my unborn child is? I am coming up to 30 weeks now and it is getting unbearable.

I had sex with this old friend on day 28 of my cycle, I then proceeded to have a period starting on day 32 of my cycle, which was normal and lasted six days. I allegedly fell pregnant the following month, although the hospital seems to think my due date is a week out. They think the baby is a week older than we think it is. I didn’t use protection with my friend but he didn’t ejaculate inside me. I was having regular sex with my husband without protection and he was ejaculating inside me. I usually have a regular cycle of 28–32 days.
Can you help answer my questions?

Janice

answer

Dear Janice

There is very little doubt that your husband is the father of your baby.

Because you have a slightly longer cycle than usual, I expect the hospital have said you are an extra week pregnant, rather than the baby being a week older than you have calculated. You will not have conceived whilst you were having a period.

The usual way to determine paternity is a blood test once your baby has been born. In your situation I don’t think it is necessary. But if you do decide to go ahead with this, take time to think things through very carefully indeed.

All the best.
