Urinary infection when pregnant

by Dr Howard Lee

question
I'm 16 weeks pregnant and two weeks ago I had a urinary infection. My GP gave me antibiotics. I finished the course but now seem to have another infection in my lower region. The symptoms are extreme itching and external soreness (not like cystitis). I've been bathing in very salty water but it just won't go away. Any suggestions as to what it might be?

answer
A urine infection in these first weeks of your pregnancy is relatively common. I would imagine you had some form of ‘penicillin’ as treatment – possibly Amoxicillin – and now, it sounds as if you’ve developed a ‘Thrush’ infection, which is just as common in early pregnancy. This is often a complication of having penicillin, or any antibiotics. Certainly keep on with the salt baths and avoid soap, which will make you even sorer. Your doctor will be able to supply some soothing cream that will help to ‘kill’ this fugal infection. Applying natural yogurt locally also helps to speed up recovery.
