Will a drinking binge affect my baby?
I am quite concerned! I have had two positive home pregnancy tests and I am waiting for the result of my GP urine test. My ovulation date was New Year's Eve and I celebrated with a few glasses of wine. Five days later I got quite drunk - I guess I took twelve units. Since this time I have had two glasses of wine and now have stopped alcohol altogether. I am concerned that I have caused damage to my baby. Can alcohol in the first week of conception cause abnormalities?
Stop fretting - there is absolutely nothing you can do. I would imagine that there have been thousands of healthy babies conceived under the same circumstances as yours. As far as drinking in the early stages of your pregnancy are concerned, what matters now is that you have already stopped.
It's sometimes helpful to remember that 30 (let alone 40) years ago, much less was known about the possible effects of alcohol during pregnancy. Consequently, many women continued to drink (and even smoke) through their whole pregnancy and still produce a perfectly healthy baby.
