Hepatitis vaccine fears

by Dr Howard Lee

question
I am undergoing IVF treatment and recently had two embryos put back on a frozen embryo transfer. However, as I am going on holiday to the Dominican Republic, I was given the Hepatitis A booster just six weeks ago.

Is this going to damage the embryos? I have only just found out that it is contraindicated for pregnancy and am worried about what the possible outcome could be. Please advise.

answer

I am sorry that you have some anxieties with regard to a recent Hepatitis A booster and its possible effects on embryo transfer.

Always a concern with early pregnancy and vaccines is the possible body reaction to foreign material - and, with this reaction, either an allergic or feverish response in the recipient. This can have damaging effects on a young embryo.

Hepatitis A vaccine, which does, in fact, contain inactivated viruses - as opposed to live viruses - is less likely to cause this problem.

The vaccine also comes under the category of Special Precautions (used with caution) - as opposed to contraindicated (not to be used at all) and, again, has less risk of causing any damage.

There will have been a reaction within your body systems by now - following the vaccine administration - and so I am sure that there is no cause for concern.
