Vaginal discharge

by Dr Howard Lee

question
I am seven months pregnant. I have always suffered with a vaginal discharge, but lately it has got worse. Why is it do I always seem to have it? Even when I come out of the bath, I have white gluey discharge, though no irritation. I've just had a course of Canesten. This cleared it up for a day, now it's back. What can I do about it?

answer
Remember that chronic problems are often sexually related – a partner carries the infecting agent, without having any obvious symptoms, only to pass it back to you after any treatments. For this reason, it is always sensible for both people to have treatment together.

Most women are aware of clothing/contact problems i.e. tight fitting jeans or underwear and the irritation some detergents can cause. Also, being ‘too clean’ by using soap/douches, etc. can be a contributory factor and things like
talcum powder are best avoided.

Sometimes women overproduce the natural lubrication mucus, which easily becomes a target for an increased growth of bacteria. This then means you get vaginal ‘discharges’ which soil or stain clothing. Certainly, your pregnancy means we wouldn’t suggest further treatment at the moment. It’s interesting that Canesten helped, albeit for a short time. I just wonder if there is some constant source of 'irritation'? After your pregnancy it will be important to get this sorted out.
