Urinary infection when pregnant

question
I'm 16 weeks pregnant and two weeks ago I had a urinary infection. My GP gave me antibiotics. I finished the course but now seem to have another infection in my lower region. The symptoms are extreme itching and external soreness (not like cystitis). I've been bathing in very salty water but it just won't go away. Any suggestions as to what it might be?

answer
A urine infection in these first weeks of your pregnancy is relatively common. I would imagine you had some form of 'penicillin' as treatment ? possibly Amoxicillin, as this group of drugs is regarded as the safest way to treat urinary infection in early pregnancy. It now sounds as if you've developed 'thrush', which is a yeast infection. Thrush is quite common in early pregnancy, due to the hormonal changes, and can also be a complication of having a broad spectrum antibiotic such as Amoxycillin.

Certainly keep on with the salt baths and avoid soap, which will make you even sorer. You are likely to need some specific thrush treatment, as this isn't likely to go away by itself, given your particular set of circumstances. You shouldn't take an oral thrush treatment such as Diflucan 1 whilst you are pregnant. You will need to use a local vaginal treatment instead. Your doctor or midwife will be able to prescribe a suitable treatment. Applying live natural yogurt locally also helps to speed up recovery.
