Pregnant teenagers, young mothers and benefits
I live with my parents and they are unemployed and claiming benefits. What can we claim?
During pregnancy: You won't be able to claim any benefits in your own right (apart from Maternity Allowance if you have been working), but your parents will be getting Income Support (IS) or income-based Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA), as well as Child Tax Credit (CTC) and Child Benefit for you. They can also claim all the other health service benefits and social fund payments that go with those benefits (see 'What's available'). They should tell the JobCentre Plus that you are pregnant because they will be entitled to receive milk tokens for you. If you qualify for Maternity Allowance it could affect the amount of benefit paid to your parents so get advice if this applies to you.
After the birth: Once your baby is born either you or your parents can claim Child Benefit for your baby. You will not be entitled to claim IS until you are 16 but your parents will be entitled to extra Child Tax Credit for your baby. Your parents may also be entitled to receive the Sure Start Maternity Grant of £500. Once you reach 16 the situation will change - see the next section.
I live with my parents and they are working. Can we claim anything?
During pregnancy: Because you are under 16 you cannot claim benefits for yourself (apart from Maternity Allowance if you have been working). Your parents will get Child Benefit for you while you are at school and may get Child Tax Credit (CTC). If they get CTC of more than the family element they can claim the £500 Sure Start Maternity Grant for your baby.
After the birth: Once your baby is born either you or your parents can claim Child Benefit for your baby. Your parents can claim CTC for your baby. If they get CTC of more than the family element plus the baby addition they can claim the £500 Sure Start Maternity Grant within three months of the birth.
Your parents may also be able to claim Working Tax Credit (WTC) if they are working and on a low income. You will be entitled to the Care to Learn? Funding to pay for childcare while you are at school.
