Let The Down's Syndrome Association help

by The Down's Syndrome Association
The Down's Syndrome Association offers help and support to families and carers of people with Down's syndrome.

The association produces information on all aspects of the condition, and provides help to anybody who contacts or visits the National Office in London. The association has a Resource Centre stocked with books, information and videos.

It has a network of volunteer parent-led support groups throughout England, Wales and Northern Ireland. A 24-hour help-line is provided so that parents can talk over any problem that they have.

The association exists to help any family that needs help. It has translated its parent information into Arabic, Welsh, Chinese, Urdu, Punjabi, Gujerati, Bengali and Spanish.

The association works hard to challenge and change public opinion. It funds poster campaigns and strives to put a balanced and positive image of the condition, and the families that it represents, to the media.

Each year it organises an annual achievement award to show the public just how much can be achieved by adults with Down's syndrome. The association maintains an active interest in research aimed at improving the lives of people with Down's syndrome.

It is a membership-led and driven organisation, open to anyone who wishes to join. Full membership which confers voting rights is open to parents, adults with Down's syndrome and their carers. Associate membership is open to grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters and godparents. Affiliate membership is open to schools, colleges, organisations and all professionals, such as doctors, nurses, and speech and language therapists.

Members are allocated to the branch of their choice. All branches are different, but in general branches welcome and support new parents and members, provide access to a wide range of resources, produce newsletters, arrange social and fundraising events and contribute to the development of the association through representation on the National Forum.

All members of the association receive a regular newsletter and information about events and conferences organised throughout the year. Full members are entitled to vote at meetings, hold office or run a branch of the association. The association exists to support parents and carers of people with Down's syndrome and improve the lives of people with the condition. Without members, it would not exist.
