What can I expect on my first visit to my doctor?

by Dr Howard Lee

question
What can I expect on my first antenatal visit? Should my husband come too?

answer
There is so much that can be accomplished and taught at the initial obstetrical visit that it is difficult for the new parents to take it all in.

Yes, your husband should definitely come along. Between you, you will remember more.

Information regarding medication, nutrition, activities (including sexual), travel, exercise, over the counter medication, alcohol, recreational drugs, vitamins and treatments for the common complaints of pregnancy is given at this visit. This is also useful information for your husband.

A very thorough history (including the father's side of the family) is conducted, if your doctor doesn’t know you well. There will also be a physical examination. We are often able to hear foetal heart beats at this visit - quite exciting for both of you.

Your partner will also get a chance to ask his own questions.

Lab work, including a urinalysis, blood work for haemoglobin (to check for anaemia) and any possible infections which could cause damage to your baby, rubella (German measles) and cervical cultures for any possible infections, are often also done. You will be given information on genetic screening such as amniocentesis and AFP, which you will need to think about in order to make informed decisions at future appointments.

So, this is a very important visit. It’s also one which your husband should try to attend.
