Pregnancy week 7

A week by week guide to what’s happening to you and your baby

WHAT'S HAPPENING WITH YOU

Rapid acceleration of hormones can cause spots. Wash your face twice a day with a gentle cleanser and drink plenty of water. Vitamin B6 also improves the condition of your skin.

Your waist may already be expanding, causing your clothes to feel snug. You may experience constipation and have occasional bouts of indigestion. Some women also feel a bit dizzy or light-headed at times. (Any persistent symptoms that concern you should be reported to your doctor.)

WHAT'S HAPPENING WITH YOUR BABY

Your baby-to-be is the size of a small bean, measuring in at nine millimetres, crown to rump. It has dark spots, which mark the early formation of the eye lens. Pits indicate the formation of nostrils and ears. The brain, heart, limbs and facial characteristics are now forming. Your baby's heart now has a right and left chamber.

HEALTHY EATING

Cravings and food aversions are very common during the first trimester. Most of these reactions will disappear by the time you near your fourth month of pregnancy. Contrary to popular belief, craving certain foods does not necessarily indicate that your body is demanding that particular item. A good rule of thumb is to indulge in all cravings that are healthy and seek alternatives for your more unhealthy cravings. Perhaps plain yoghurt with strawberries can be substituted for strawberry ice cream.

If you can't stand the taste of a particular food avoid it, but fulfil your requirements with a food of similar nutritional value.

FACT OF THE WEEK

Eating healthy is extremely important for the well-being of your foetus. One study showed that women who ate nutritiously throughout their pregnancy had healthy babies 95 per cent of the time. Of the women who ate very poorly, only eight per cent of their babies were in good or excellent condition.
