Is sinus congestion common in pregnancy?

by Peg Plumbo

question
I have always had trouble with my sinuses, but since I've been pregnant I have had severe congestion. I wake up in the middle of the night unable to breath. Is this common in pregnancy? I use a vapouriser but have not taken any medication.

answer
Yes, congestion is one of the ‘common complaints of pregnancy’. Not that it makes it any easier to bear, but it is very normal. Some believe it to be due to the effects of progesterone, which makes the membranes softer and more vascular. Humidity and steam are the best treatments, check with your doctor for medications that are safe - however I sympathise with your unwillingness to take any.

I hope this gets better toward the end; congestion often gets less as pregnancy progresses.

Best of luck.
