Foetal heart slow at 16 weeks

by Peg Plumbo

question
After looking at the information you have on foetal heart rates, I notice women tend to be worried about heart rates which they fear are too high. My question is what is considered too low? I am 16 weeks pregnant and at our last appointment the rate was 120 beats per minute. Do I need to be concerned? Does a lower rate mean the foetus is less healthy than a foetus with a higher heart rate?

Thank you.

answer

Dear Louise,

A foetal heart rate anywhere between 120 and 160 is considered normal at any time during pregnancy. The best indicator of foetal well-being during pregnancy is appropriate growth. The uterus is generally approximately halfway between the umbilicus and the pubic bone at this time.

A rare problem such as ‘heart block’ may cause a slow foetal heartbeat but it is generally slower than 100 and is rarely evident this early.

I would try not to worry unless there are other signs, such as slow growth of the uterus.

I hope this reassures you — try not to worry.

Peg
