Started pill cycle a week late

by Peg Plumbo

question
I was put on a birth control pill about four months ago. Six weeks ago my doctor changed my prescription. I was a week late starting the pack and had a very abnormal period about two weeks ago. I had intercourse during the second day of my period with no additional protection. I am starting to have some of the same symptoms I had with my first pregnancy. Could I be pregnant?

answer
I really need a few more details, but I will assume that you took no pills during the week when you normally would have. If you simply went from the old pill to the new pill with no missed pills, your chances of pregnancy would be remote (although possible if the newer pill was a lighter dose).

If you missed a week of active pills, the chances that your own hormones (the ones that initiate ovulation) would begin to kick in is very much a possibility.

Do a pregnancy test. If it is negative, do another one in one to two weeks’ time. If you want to keep this possible pregnancy, it might be best to stop taking the pills, but make sure you use another method of contraception until you confirm whether or not you are pregnant. There have been reports of foetal defects when a woman stays on the pill but the chances are very unlikely.

I hope this has been helpful.
