Appetite and prevention of nausea
I am nine weeks pregnant and can't stop eating. When hunger pangs strike, I know that nausea will soon follow so I eat and eat and eat. Even after I'm stuffed, I still feel hungry. I am dreading getting on the scales at my next appointment. What can I do to help control my appetite?
There is no simple answer to this, although you may find that the problem will decrease over time. Hopefully your doctor and midwife will be sympathetic ask her or him to outline a diet for you and to recommend suggestions for various foods or strategies for controlling your nausea.
Some women gain quite a bit in the first trimester and then slow towards the end. The greatest appetite suppressant, however, is exercise. The brain liberates chemicals that give you a feeling of fullness during exercise so incorporate a 20minute aerobic exercise routine into your daily activities.
Including some fat in your diet might also help curb your appetite until the next meal. Some women find that chewing gum helps while others eat crackers or rice cakes to help control nausea without taking on the excess calories.
Try not to be intimidated by the scales. It is not that useful in assessing your overall nutritional intake.
