Pregnancy week 22
WHAT'S HAPPENING WITH YOU
Sex may be very fulfilling for women at this stage of pregnancy, aided by the increase in blood flow to the clitoris and an increase in vaginal lubrication. On the other hand, some women don't want to be touched at all. Whatever works for you and your partner is best. Just be assured that sex during pregnancy is safe for both you and your baby.
WHAT'S HAPPENING WITH YOUR BABYYour baby now weighs almost one pound. He or she measures 19cm from crown to rump, or 10 1/2 inches from head to toe. Your baby now has eyelids and eyebrows and has developed fat, which helps to keeps it warm. In boys, the testes descend. Tiny ears can hear sounds from outside.
HEALTHY EATING
Pregnant women are vulnerable to food poisoning, so avoid raw foods and ensure that your foods are cooked thoroughly. Other foods you need to avoid for the same reasons are soft, unripened cheeses such as brie, undercooked eggs, patés, and pre-packed salads. Also on the hit list is liver and liver products plus vitamin A supplements as these are high in vitamin A and can lead to some birth defects.
FACT OF THE WEEK
Women who smoke absorb chemicals that directly limit foetal growth by reducing the number of cells produced in the baby's blood and brain. Nicotine also makes blood vessels constrict and reduce the blood supply to the placenta. Smokers have nearly twice the risk of miscarriage and stillbirth. Smoking greatly increases the risk of the placenta being attached too low down in the uterus. Smokers are more likely to have children with all types of congenital malformations including central nervous system abnormalities, cleft lip (also previously referred to as a harelip) and cleft palate.
