Foreign travel during pregnancy
I am 20 weeks pregnant and am planning a holiday in the next few weeks. I would love to go somewhere exotic like Thailand, India or Morocco but I'm worried that I may have to take malaria pills. Are these safe to take during pregnancy, or should I stick to Europe and avoid going anywhere that might pose a health risk? Many thanks for your help.
I am often asked this sort of question, and I find it a
difficult one!

difficult one!
These are the main points to bear
in mind:
- It could be difficult to get medical insurance if you are 24+ weeks pregnant.
- If you develop a problem with your pregnancy, or give birth prematurely, you may have no alternative but to go to the local hospital (which is why you must have medical insurance). A local hospital in an exotic beach resort town may not be able to give you and your baby the same standard of care as your hospital in the UK.
- You are not going to enjoy a long flight when you are five or six months pregnant.
- Pregnant women cannot regulate their body temperature very effectively, so you might find extreme heat and humidity difficult to cope with.
- Travelling to developing countries means youre susceptible to diarrhoea and vomiting from an infection or food poisoning. If it happens to you, you will be worried.
As far as malaria tablets are concerned, some but not all of them are safe to take during pregnancy. I suggest you dont go to a malarial area.
All in all, you may well have a great holiday in Morocco, India or Thailand, but if I were you, I would opt for somewhere much nearer home, just to be on the safe side.
