Sore and swollen gums
I am at 37-weeks pregnant now and I have developed soreness in my gums. They appear to be swollen. What can I do to treat this discomfort and is it linked to a Vitamin deficiency?
Melody
Swelling and tenderness in the gums can be a normal adaptation to pregnancy hormones. Of course, it may also be a sign of an infection, so it is a good idea to have this investigated.
Pregnant women do develop an increased sensitivity to dental plaque that may result in swelling and soreness. Careful and thorough tooth brushing and flossing twice a day will help minimise this problem.
Some women also develop an Epulis during pregnancy which is considered normal. This is a soft tissue growth that usually appears on the gum or grows down over a tooth. It bleeds easily with brushing and goes away once your baby is born.
Salt water rinses (1 tsp in a cup of warm water) can be soothing.
This does not indicate a vitamin deficiency but can be a normal complaint in pregnancy.
