Hospital bag

by Christine Hill

question
Help, I'm due in eight days and can’t wait. It’s my second baby and I've tried everything to get labour going. Any ideas or is it still too soon? Also my hospital bag looks really empty compared to first time round, any suggestions what to put in it that I might have forgotten?
Sharon

answer
Dear Sharon,
Unfortunately there is no foolproof way to bring on labour. Your baby isn't ready yet. I would try and use this boring waiting time to get your eldest child used to a routine that will fit in as much as possible with a new baby. Then w When you come home from hospital, there will be one area of his life that won't be too dramatically different. If he is aged three or younger, try and encourage him to have a nap after lunch when you do. If possible, get him used to spending more time with his father, granny or friends because when you go into labour and have your baby you will have less time for him, although you will of course still love him just as much. Depending on his age, it might be a good idea to try and explain this to him. Do you have a present ready for the baby to give him?

Here is a checklist for your labour bag:

  • Hospital notes (if appropriate)
  • Nightdress/lightweight dressing gown/slippers
  • Washbag with flannel, soap, toothbrush, mouthwash and plus towel
  • Walkman or radio and a magazine
  • Maternity pads or night-time sanitary towels for you, and nappies, nightie or sleep suit, vest and swaddling sheet for your baby ifnot provided by the hospital
  • Camera (loaded with film and with working battery and film!)
  • Food for your partner and for you after delivery
  • Extra pillows with coloured cases (to leave in the car, so your partner cancollect them if necessary)
  • Nursing bras and extra nightdress
  • Note pad and pen (remember you will have no memory) and tissues.
  • Baby nail scissors, baby soap and large cotton wool balls.
Good luck!
