Twins and perception of movement

by Peg Plumbo

question
I am pregnant with twins, and am in my 17th week. I am somewhat worried that I don't feel enough foetal movement. Is it still too early or should I be feeling more movement by now? This is my second pregnancy. My first child was very, very active.

Thank you

answer

Dear Diana,

There is a great deal of variety in when mothers are aware of foetal movement. Although one would expect that when carrying twins you should feel it sooner, this is not always the case. Much depends upon the position of the babies, their size, the amount of amniotic fluid, the mother's weight and so on.

If your GP or midwife has determined that the size of the babies is appropriate for their gestation, with a normal amniotic fluid volume, and if foetal movements and the two heartbeats are visualised on ultrasound, I would not worry.

It may be helpful to know if the babies are monozygotic or dizygotic (identical or non-identical). The doctor or midwife should be able to get a fairly good idea with specialised ultrasound examination.

I wish you the best with the babies and try not to worry.
