Spotting and bleeding early in triplet pregnancy

: Bleeding during any pregnancy can mean imminent miscarriage or can mean nothing at all. That is why the doctor is in a difficult position. He or she can't honestly reassure you that this is not an ominous sign, because it might be. Nor can a doctor say that bleeding will mean the loss of the pregnancy, because it often has no significance at all, especially in the first trimester. The multiple gestation and the fact that you have noted the passage of tissue puts you at a rather high risk of miscarriage, but, still, even this can be normal. The tissue may represent your own endometrial tissue or even the loss of a fourth embryo. All the doctor can really do is repeat the ultrasounds to reassure everyone that all looks well for the moment. Bleeding rarely extends much into the second trimester, and if it does it is likely to be more placental in origin.

Progesterone has been tried in the past to try to prevent miscarriage but its use has mixed results, depending on which study you read. All you can do is rest a bit more, eat well and drink plenty of fluids.
