Healthy food to go

by Sue Gilbert

question
My husband, 13-month-old daughter and I will be soon be going on holiday. We'll be driving for long periods of time. We want to eat healthily while travelling. What do you suggest?

answer
Because travelling itself will be something different, it is a good idea to stick with familiar foods. Bringing along food from home is the best way to ensure good nutrition and healthy eating while on the road. To keep the food safe for serving you will need a good cool-box, ice packs and a good thermos that holds its temperature for several hours so you can keep your daughter's milk cold. Make sure you keep the cooler well supplied with ice by restocking it along the way.

You will need to stop on the way, perhaps at a shaded rest area with picnic tables or at a park so that you can eat. It isn't wise to feed a child in a car seat. If the child starts to choke, you may not be able to get to her in time to give first aid. Stopping for meals or snacks is also a good idea nutritionally because it will keep food from being used as entertainment, as it often is in travel. Giving children snacks to keep them quiet in the back seat is sending the wrong message about the role of food. (We often wonder why we eat when we're bored.) Getting out of the car for a bit is a good idea anyway so that everyone can stretch and get some fresh air.

Drinks are fine while travelling. Pack individual juice containers that don't need refrigeration. The juice can be transferred to a bottle or a beaker.

Some good travel foods are those that Mother Nature has already packaged, like bananas, oranges and hard-boiled eggs. Try to stick with foods that are easy on the tummy, like bread, bananas, individual containers of apple sauce, crackers and yoghurt. The small boxes of cereal make good snacks. If you have any doubt about how long the leftovers can stay cold in your cool-box, then just throw them away.

Pack several different bags of toys and stuffed animals. Bring lots of books that you can read to your daughter and take along some of her favourite tapes.

Finally, don't forget a packet of moistened wipes or a damp flannel in a plastic bag. Have a wonderful holiday.
