Travels with your children

by Dr Howard Lee
continued from page 1
Stomach upsets and diarrhoea.

Children are particularly vulnerable to traveller’s diarrhoea (TD). Infants seem to be at greater risk of infection; especially if they’re on formula feeds. The TD disease seems to be more persistent in one and two-year olds, where vomiting and diarrhoea can quickly cause dehydration. When dealing with food abroad you can reduce the risk of infection by following the maxim; ‘boil it, peel it or forget it!’

Don’t give children anti-diarrhoea medication

Rehydration is the mainstay of treatment, and so it’s wise to take packets of rehydration powder with you on holiday. These can be mixed up with cooled, boiled water and sipped gradually. Several varieties are available, including Diocalm Replenish, Dioralyte (natural & flavoured) and Dioralyte Relief.
