Picky eater: Should I be concerned?

by Deb Donovan

question
My 17-month-old son is still breastfeeding, which I think is terrific. But I am beginning to be concerned about his lack of interest in fruits and vegetables. I’d feel happier if he would at least occasionally eat something other than crackers or noodles. Is this something I should be concerned about?

answer
Toddlers are often picky eaters. Their appetite often decreases as their growth rate begins to slow. They are also just too busy to eat.

Having small, healthy, and easy-to-grab snacks (food on the run) available for him every three to four hours may help. Don't be surprised if he eats one type of food one day and then refuses it the next. He is just acting his age. Try to interest him in a variety of new foods, just a taste to begin with.

Try to keep mealtimes peaceful. Continue to offer your child delicious, healthy foods, just like the rest of the family, and let him decide how much he eats.

If you are still concerned, you could talk to your health visitor or the doctor: they will be able to give you guidance on a balanced diet for your son. However, as long as he is growing as he should, and is not overly tired or listless (a sign of perhaps not enough iron in his diet), he is probably getting what he needs right now.
